There are 8 personal pronouns in the Ukrainian language:
я | I |
ти | you (singular informal) |
він | he |
вона | she |
воно | it |
ми | we |
ви | you (plural or singular formal) |
вони | they |
The personal pronoun ТИ can be used only to address one person with whom you have informal relationships. Usually, we use it for our friends, family members, colleagues (in the same status), small kids (up to 12 years old), and sometimes people of our own age in informal situations.
For everyone else, we usually use the personal pronoun ВИ, even if we address only one person. Also, we always use the pronoun ВИ, when we address more than one person.
We write all the pronouns with a small letter, but there is one exception. The pronoun ВИ will be written with a capital letter ("Ви") if you write it on official papers, documents or letters if you address to only one person. In all other situations, it is better to write it with a small letter.
When you get acquainted with a person of your age and you have informal communication, it will be good to offer "drop the formalities" and "switch to ТИ". You can do it using these phrases:
Дава́йте на “ти́”?
Пере́йдемо на “ти́”?
Пропону́ю перейти́ на “ти́”.
Мо́жна на “ти́”?
